How to 4x your typing speed
Harnessing the power of deliberate practice
We spend much of our adult lives in front of a computer screen, hitting keys over and over. To become more productive, what can we do? Well, increase our typing speed of course.
Not only is a good typing speed important for any sort of work, it may benefit writers specifically, as it allows for effortless flow during writing sessions, which translates into ease and fluency of expression.
But most of us don’t seem to improve our typing speed over time, no matter how many hours we spend bashing away at a keyboard. This is because what you need is deliberate practice.
Deliberate practice
Typing is a skill, like any other. To improve, we need deliberate practice. This means three things: timely feedback, focused efforts and exploiting weaknesses. When we apply these principles to the practice of typing, what we get is drastic improvement in a short period of time. (Learn more about deliberate practice here.)
The routine
So, how did I apply these three principles to typing?
1. I built a daily typing habit. Consistency is king when it comes to practice. This blog post can teach you how.
